It's only 14.45 but the low winter sun is already casting long shadows across the line. That's the problem with the valley branches, low down as there are and surrounded by the hills and mountains. But in a field high above the line, south of Ystrad Mynach, there is a bright patch still illuminating the tracks, with Ystrad Mynach signal box, and an attractive bracket signal hiding in the shadows. EWS Class 37 no. 37405 has the power on, as the exhaust trail reveals, as it drags the 2F34 14.15 Rhymney to Cardiff Central train past a lower gallery of photographers. The word was that the local farmer was none too keen on photographers using his field here, but the draw to get this shot was too tempting, and whilst checking over my shoulder a few times I managed to get away with it!
