11th March 1988

I spent a lot of my childhood spending holidays with my grandparents in Burnham, and my brother and I would train spot at Reading quite often. So catching one of the regular half-hourly DMUs from Burnham to Reading was taken for granted. Looking back now it presents a vivid contrast to what you'll see on this route today, now being part of the electrified Crossrail route, albeit only as far as Maidenhead at the time of writing.
Standing in the regular bay platform 7, the one facing west, is Network South East's set (??) L120, in actual fact a single bubble car no W55020. It's standing on the front end of a Pressed Steel Class 117 three-car DMU on a working to Oxford, the regular units on this route as well as that too London. I think I must have travelled in all of the L4xx series units over time!
