Axe Gates Signal/Crossing Box was built by the Southern Railway in 1949 and closed, I presume, with the singling of line in the late `60s. That it still remains is a wonder, I guess due to finding further use in housing back-up equipment for the level crossing, or as a store for the P-way department. I recall it always being there but covered in ivy, which has obviously been removed. Here is a rear view of the box, showing that in fact it is quite tall, as from the track side it looks like a ground level box!
