29th Nov 1992

It was one those challenging days when something very unusual was working, which you knew you just had to go out to see and photograph, but the weather was just atrocious. What do you do? Well, on this occasion you get out and go for it!
Triple headers are rare enough, but on this route, unheard of. Train Load Coal’s Class 31s no’s. 31201 and 31319, and 33101, are working the “Solent & Torbay Coaster” railtour operated by DC Tours from London Waterloo to Paignton, and back. It’s seen here at Axe Gates in truly awful weather. Even the letters on the headboard are slowly being washed away! I think by taking a poor colour slide and switching the image to black and white just about gets away with it! It’s gritty, grainy, full of atmosphere and giving a sense of power and effort. Not my best image by a long way, but interesting all the same.
