Cornwall to Scotland: via Axminster! Unlikely, but in this instance, perfectly true!
Due to engineering work taking place between Exeter and Taunton on the GWR Main Line, all trains were being diverted via the ex-LSWR line through Axminster, and on to Yeovil. This train, the 6S55 WO 09.11 Burngullow to Irvine china clay slurry bogie tanks, would have then gone to Westbury, up to Bath and back on route by Bristol.
Seen at 14.52 west of the station, behind EWS Class 66 no. 66025, the low winter sun was giving me some challenges, and on reflection (no pun intended!) I should have sought a more broadside view. So I have played around with the photo to increase the contrast and turn it into a black and white image, which seems to be better than the original colour slide. Nevertheless, this was a very rare event. I cannot recall this train ever travelling over the route before.
