Class 507 no. 507018 stands at the terminus station of Kirkby, arrived at 12.13 and now forming a return train to Liverpool. The electrified 3rd rail ended here and there is a buffer stop preventing diesel and electric trains meeting between this and the line to Wigan, which is non-electrified. In 2021 an electric train crashed into the buffer stop here due to the lack of concentration by the driver, who was using his mobile phone!
