(4) On time at 15.05, 33202 "Meteor" now leads 1Z54 15.05 Barmouth to Taunton, the "Cambrian Borderer", as it enters the famous wooden Barmouth Bridge.
This structure, also known as Barmouth Viaduct, is 699 metres (764 yards) in length, and was opened in 1867. In the 1980 it was discovered that marine woodworm were attacking the original timbers and the future looked very bleak for the bridge, but fortunately it was repaired in the mid 1980s and when reopened only multiple units were permitted to cross it. However, this restriction was lifted in 2005 so this might have been one of the first loco-hauled trains to cross it for a very long time.
It was just wonderful travelling in a first class Mark One coach, occasionally looking out of the vestibule window and taking in the warm spring sun and air as this tour weaved its way through the Cambrian scenery. Great memories.
