29th April 2006 - Cambrian Coast routes to Aberystwyth & Pwllheli
(1) A glorious day for trip to Barmouth! My friend Bob and I decided to travel first class on Pathfinder Railtour's "Cambrian Borderer" tour, the 1Z53 05.36 Taunton to Barmouth. Mind you, the day got off to a dubious start as the guard booked to work on our train was involved in a road accident on his way to Taunton, although he was still able to join the train. Lucky for him that the accident was not too serious and he wasn't hurt.

Starting out behind 47703 "Hermes", this was exchanged at Birmingham New Street for a pair of Class 33s, nos. 33103 "Swordfish" and 33202 "Meteor". 33202 was run-around at Machynlleth so that 33103 "Swordfish" could handle the train alone to Barmouth and over the Barmouth Bridge, spreading the weight on this weight-restricted bridge. After arriving at 13.16 Bob and I head off for a nice lunch at a nearby restaurant before our leisurely trip home.

Waiting at 14.30 in the station at Barmouth, 33202 "Meteor" is seen at the rear of the train, and will head it back to Machynlleth later.
