23rd Aug 2000

Having patiently waited for over an hour, but still ahead of the booked departure time, 60076 heads off, snaking out of the yard at 16.30 with the 6M17 16.46 Newport ADJ to Wembley “Enterprise” service.
Enterprise was really the last hurrah for the traditional mixed freight, introduced by Transrail in the mid nineties, whereby shippers could send wagonload traffic between a wide number of railheads around the country by scheduled service. This particular train has some covered hoppers followed by a rake of empty intermodal flats, so perhaps this train was not so profitable as would have been hoped for today. Although not necessarily typical the concept of a mixed freight gradually faded away, although the last true mixed freights have only disappeared for good relatively recently (2018).
