14th May 2000

The day after the Newton Abbot Festival of Transport, a Pathfinder Tours railtour, the "Torbay Quarryman", was operated between Crewe and Newton Abbot, returning to Exeter and then on to the Meldon Quarry branch. After leaving Meldon the train ran back to Paignton this time, before heading back up north to Crewe behind the 31s, which had run down light engine from Exeter. Quite a day out!
I had got a shot of the tour earlier that day at Taunton, with Fragonset's 31601 and 31602 in charge (see the Taunton gallery for that shot), and then headed down to Hackney Lane, near the Passage House Inn, to capture EWS Class 66 no. 66108 heading the train down to Paignton in the afternoon at 17.22, this being the 1Z37 15.57 Meldon Quarry to Paignton. EWS Class 66 no. 66009 was dead on the rear of the train.
