Newton Abbot (inc. Aller Junction), Devon
I remember this station when it had all of its platforms and the through line, which curiously was the closest line to the main station building, access to all platforms being from the over-bridge. I remember David & Charles and their Pullman coaches parked up alongside their building, quietly rotting away. I just about remember the loco depot, and certainly all of the engineers sidings that were between the depot and station. They always seemed filled with ancient rolling stock. I even remember the old carriage heating unit, converted from a Class 24 locomotive, seemingly always parked up and out of use. During the 2 week-long ASLEF train strike I might even have just got a little too acquainted with that Class 24: well, they should have locked the doors! Today, Newton Abbot is still a major station and well-used, but the layout is much simpler now.
