Hope for Honiton Tunnel Part 2: Freightliner duo Class 66/6 no. 66601 "The Hope Valley" and Class 66/5 no. 66952 approach the closed station at 12.36 on the 6Y98 09.40 Westbury Up T.C. to Axminster loaded ballast.
This 1400 ton train, comprising 5 x JJA and 15 x HQA ballast hoppers, had been slowly traversing the line from Axminster at a stately 27mph so I had plenty of time to get here after photographing the train at the station. Of course it's all nice and flat until Seaton Junction but then the real work will begin up to the tunnel. These two locos will have to work hard to surmount the summit after the 1 in 80 haul up Honiton Incline with little opportunity to take a run at it!
This was the beginning of a two week possession to allow track relaying in the tunnel, plus some other track laying further towards Exeter.
