If there's going to be a gallery of this railway then you have to include the famous Meldon Viaduct! Spring time colours light up the view of the Victorian structure on this lovely warm spring day. Standing 151ft above the West Okement River this wrought iron and cast iron viaduct was built in 1874 to carry the double track LSWR/Southern Railway London to Plymouth main line. Even after this important route was closed in 1968 tracks remained and it was used as a head shunt for the quarry trains! This arrangement ended in 1990. It's now part of the Granite Way walking and cycling route.
