Okehampton & Meldon Quarry Branch, Devon

Okehampton station is a remarkable place, almost completely intact despite being abandoned for years since the ending of passengers services to the town in the early 1970s. Latterly acquired and developed by Devon County Council the station is now run as an attraction for the town. The Dartmoor Railway run seasonal trains and on summer Sundays there is a regular Exeter to Okehampton service. The quarry is closed though, for the moment. It is possible that extraction of ballast could resume again one day but all of the plant and equipment has been demolished.

It's amazing to think that this route was once the Southern Railway main line to Plymouth and branches on the "Withered Arm". With the continuing threat of erosion on the GWR main line through Dawlish will this main line reawaken again one day....?
