13th March 1997

A train of northbound HEA 4-wheel wagons is taken away from Bank Quay station by Class 60 no. 60008 "Gypsum Queen II", looking snappy in its Loadhaul livery. The time is 10.25. Annoyingly on this visit to Warrington I was unable to identify some of the trains I saw, but looking back at a contemporary edition of Freightmaster from early 1997 might have helped me.
HEA hoppers were invariably used for domestic coal and at that time there was indeed a morning 6N18 08.19 Warrington Arpley to Blackburn service that could fit the bill. The only problem is that it was a "Q" train booked to run on Mondays and Fridays only, and today was a Thursday. But I would say that it was still a fair chance that this was the service, albeit a bit later than scheduled. I guess we'll never know!
