Workington, Cumbria.

Still with an active port, once home to various industries, including a major steel works. I’ve been to Workington a few times over the years and although it’s a gritty northern industrial town there are some notable architectural highlights here, not least being the station. Much of the former LNWR Workington Main station still stands, and it has recently had some improvements made outside, with a new smart station approach and extensive car park. When I first visited there were still two through freight running lines as well as the two main platforms and a bay, although the latter was used for stabling locos and units. Today the through lines have been disconnected and partially lifted, although this rationalisation process does seem to be taking its time! But the atmosphere and heritage of the old station still exudes, supported by the existence, for the moment at least, of mechanical signalling controlled from Workington Main No.2 Signal Box.
