26th July 1987

Class 33/1 no. 33116 arrives with two rakes of 4TC units forming a Bournemouth to Weymouth train, a routine here that had been playing out since the end of the 1960s. But change was on its way - the 750vDC third rail was already in place and the semaphores were soon to go. The 4TCs would be withdrawn and the 33/1s would find other work for a while. Soon, the "plastic pig" Class 442 "Wessex" EMUs would arrive.
Over in Jersey Sidings GWR green celebrity Class 47/4 no. 47484 "Isambard Kingdom Brunel" is stabled with its short rake of Mark Is. The Weymouth Quay line passes just this side of the sidings. This was not a railtour, but one of the loco-hauled summer timetable workings between Weymouth and Bristol or Cardiff. The train would have arrived in the morning and the return service would leave later in the afternoon.
