(1) Big Train - Big Push! Heavy railroading, west-country style! Each evening this week the High Output Ballast Cleaner train (HOBC) was required in the Totnes area, the first time this train has operated in the west. It's an impressive train and especially so when it has to start climbing the moment it leaves Fairwater Yard! This is the 6Y11 17.52 Fairwater Yard to Totnes.
Freightliner "Powerhaul" Class 66 no. 66414 (the former DRS "James the Engine"!) is laying down the power as it helps drag the train up towards Whiteball. It may only be about 1 in 369 at this point but uphill is really uphill when you have a heavy train such as this to move. What was even more impressive was that the rear loco 66596 was also under power, digging-in to shove the train all the way up the hill too. Class 66s are not known for their aural effects but these two were certainly impressing me as they passed me by on this lovely warm evening. You can experience the sight and sounds of this train by watching the video on my You Tube channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z88cH7ObrBw
