Bradford-on-Tone, Somerset
Not having taken photos here before, in 2020 Network Rail had a purge on the line side vegetation and have cleared many great locations of decades of unchecked tree growth, now happily suitable for photography. I'll use this gallery for images taken at Bradford-on-Tone and Nynehead, a little further west towards Wellington.
On 16th May 1991 a train of 4-wheel TTA fuel tanks wagons was derailed at Bradford-on-Tone, just west of the level crossing, and what followed was a huge fire that took two days to bring under control. Help was needed from RNAS Yeovilton who provided one of their fire tenders to apply foam to help extinguish the flames. I can remember quite vividly the scene from local TV broadcasts at the time.
