(12) I'm standing close to the signal box at the throat of Kings Cross station, with a view into the terminus as Thameslink's Class 700 no. 700039 departs at 14.21 on the 1P56 14.22 London Kings Cross to Peterborough service. DB Cargo Class 67 no. 67013 stands "on the blocks" ready to rescue any failed trains - a "Thunderbird" loco waiting for the call! Virgin East Coast HST and Class 91s rest in between services.
In the foreground an underground structure known as the Camden Sewer runs beneath the tracks, in some places the roof of the sewer being just a foot below the running lines! Routed diagonally across the lines, during the remodelling in early 2020 the sewer will be relocated and run straight across rather than at an angle, and be strengthened to ensure its survival.
I have been very lucky to have had the opportunity to see the railway from this side of the fence. With changes about to take place, and the lines into the station set to increase from 4 to 6, this opportunity won't be available again.
