Soon after the passing of a southbound EMU, InterCity-liveried Class 73 no. 73211 appeared from out of Popham No. 1 tunnel as it ran fast non-stop towards Southampton.
Originally no. 73113, this locomotive was renumbered as 73211 in 1988. It also once carried the name "County of West Sussex". It is still with us (2019), now part of the Network Rail fleet as 73952, re-engined and rather yellow! It doesn't get used much I believe.
