Micheldever, Hampshire
Micheldever Station is actually a place, the village being 2 miles away from the village of Micheldever. The station was originally known as Andover Road, but once Andover got its own station the station was renamed. There used to be oil sidings at this station, the goods yard being located on the east side of the mainline. These oil sidings were originally constructed in 1939, to receive oil for the Royal Air Force, presumably in preparation for wartime, which I suppose explains the rather bunker-like appearance of the buildings there. These oil sidings continued to receive oil trains, latterly for Gulf/Elf Oil. The oil traffic ended in 1994.
This is the only station between Basingstoke and Winchester and is set in a deep chalk cutting, just a short diversion off the A303, on this fast main line. North of the station are two tunnels: Popham No. 1 and No. 2, plus Litchfield Tunnel.
