Downtown Union Station was opened in 1914, promoted by the Kansas City Terminal Railroad, replacing a much smaller Union Depot in the West Bottoms suburb. At one time 12 different railroads served the station, but into the 1979s and '80s it was in decline, and was essentially closed by 1985, Amtrak using a smaller facility nearby. Fortunately the building was refurbished and developed in the 1990s, being completed in 1999 and today it is a wonderful place to visit and take in the amazing architecture, eat at the Harvey's restaurant, and even catch a train!
