I suppose this is the most famous and most classic of views of the Royal Albert Bridge, with the inscription celebrating the great engineer I.K.Brunel, and the date of opening proudly displayed above the portal. In recent years Network Rail have tidied up the bridge and it looks very clean and smart as a result.
Colas Rail Freight 70804 peeks out from inside the Devon-side span at 09.30, with the 6B36 (ThO-Q) 08.16 Moorswater Tarmac/Colas to Aberthaw Tarmac/Colas empty cement tanks.
The River Tamar is 1,100ft wide at this point. The two main spans are each 139m/455ft long, and there are 10 approach spans on the Cornish side, and 7 on the Devon side. Construction started in 1853 and the bridge opened 2nd May 1859, just 4 months before Isambard Kingdom Brunel died in September of that year.
