East Somerset Railway, Cranmore, Somerset
The East Somerset Railway holds a special place in my heart, it being the first heritage railway that I visited as a young child with my parents and brother. Back then the trains didn't reach the station at Cranmore, as that part of the line was still in BR ownership, and regular trains of bitumen from the north would be brought in and delivered to the sidings behind the station building.
I have always been captivated by the rural aspect of the railway, and the atmosphere that it exudes. Established thanks to the drive and enthusiasm from the late David Shepherd, the railway boasts some fine facilities and a railway vehicle maintenance business is established here, producing some high-quality coaching stock and locomotive body refurbishments.
The railway doesn't go far, just two and half miles to a station called Mendip Vale, but there are aspirations to extend towards Merehead in the near future, and maybe one day, further into Shepton Mallet.
