31st July 2004

The summer special of the 21st Century is represented by this HST, "off route" so to speak, with Virgin Cross Country hiring in a GNER HST set to cover the 1E34 SO 09.25 Newquay to Newcastle service. Power car 43111 is atop this set, with 43116 trailing, approaching the station non-stop at 13.00.
Although far from impressed by many aspects of privatisation, I did think that Sea Containers (parent company of GNER) brought a distinct and welcome style back to train travel with their respectful nod to the past heritage of the East Coast route. The "Route of the Flying Scotsman" strap line, along with a stylish dark blue and red livery, certainly added a sense of quality to train travel. It was a shame that in the end they did not have the financial capability to see it through.
