15th May 2010 - Taunton, Somerset
Diesel Hydraulic v Diesel Electric! Two great examples of mainline diesel preservation team up to take at Class 40 Preservation Society railtour to Cornwall. D1015 "Western Champion and 40145 "East Lancashire Railway (in a non-authentic large logo blue livery) head through Taunton on the 1Z40 05.20 Crewe to Penzance at 13.47.

As you can see, it was quite a day at Taunton! Royal train locos 67005 "Queen's Messenger" and 67006 "Royal Sovereign" are in the station with the 1Z88 13.50 Taunton to Plymouth VSOE charter. They will leave a few minutes after the Western/40 railtour has passed. If that wasn't enough excitement, Virgin Train's 57306 "Jeff Tracy" and 57308 "Tin Tin" are stabled in the bay with empty coaching stock. My notes don't tell me why they were there but the train left Taunton 50 minutes later, for Cardiff.

I'm standing on the old and spindly 40 Steps bridge, for a long time the favoured location of choice for many photos in Taunton. It was replaced a few years ago by a more robust and accessible bridge, which does not give photographers such an easy view (but not impossible). The inner bypass also passes below now, on the land in the immediate foreground.
