Llanwern Steelworks is seen in the very far distance, the originating point for this train, the 6B40 11.55 Llanwern to Port Talbot empty iron ore. But as it's actually 11.23 the train is obviously running early, not unknown. EWS Class 60 no. 60023 thunders past my location on the Green Lane bridge at Peterstone.
Steelmaking at Llanwern ended in 2001, but part of the site continues to produce steel products, operating a hot strip and cold strip mill, and a hot dip galvanising line, for a variety of use in construction and the automotive industry. It now relies of steel produced elsewhere for these products.
