Shap, Shap Wells, Shap Beck, Cumbria
Shap needs no introduction to most railfans. There are many places to view trains both north and south of the summit. Close to the Shap Wells Hotel, and accessed off the Orton road, the WCML is on a high embankment here.
You can get some good broadside views from the private road to the hotel here, although timing is important to avoid the catenary posts cutting through the loco. Sometimes it cannot be avoided! The M6 is in the background, and its noise can be a little off-putting, but the scenery around here is still very attractive. If only I could have experienced this area in the 1950s and 60s!
North of Shap there are a number of useful bridges from which some good views can be had at certain times of the day.
