Exeter Central
Better placed for the city centre, it nevertheless was the quieter of the two main stations. Connected to St. Davids via a 1 in 37 incline, one of the steepest sections of railway in the UK. If we were going shopping in Exeter, then we got off here. But we didn't do that very often, rather heading for St. Davids instead! My first memories of this station were when it was still controlled by semaphores and had the centre road between the platforms. This was mainly used, if I recall correctly, by the Meldon to Woking ballast trains, and by the trains to and from the Blue Circle cement sidings alongside the station (long gone) or to and from Exmouth Junction. There was, and still is, quite a bit of Southern concrete here!
