Coalville, Leicestershire
Once an important centre for the East Midlands coal and quarrying industries, Coalville is now a shadow of what it once was. The Traction Maintenance Depot (TMD) in Mantle Lane, Coalville was legendary amongst enthusiasts and their open days were go-to events not to be missed. The depot oddly had no refuelling or sanding facilities, so although maintenance was conducted here the locos had to go to Burton-on-Trent or Leicester to be replenished. The depot closed in 1990. The route has been proposed for use by passenger trains, but this has yet to happen, so it remains a useful connection for freight trains between the Midland Mainline and the Cross Country route.
