8th July 1984

An unfamiliar sound is reverberating off the retaining walls as Choppers 20184 and 20169 speed through at the head of the F&W Railtours "Devonshire Dart" rail tour, operating as the 1Z38 05.05 Bristol Temple Meads to Bere Alston (Gunnislake Branch) and Meldon Quarry and return.
Curiously this railtour started its journey from Bristol to Devon by heading north to Birmingham, where the 20s were picked up. It then headed back south, and on in to Plymouth, where the 20s came off and 37207 and 37185 top and tailed to Bere Alston and Friary, and back. The 20s then went on to Meldon, and then back to the Midlands.
I had read the adverts for this railtour and was determined to see it, but remember that this was in the days when information was hard to come by, so I just guessed when it might pass here and waited and waited, until I was treated with this view. What a relief! I then headed down to Plymouth to see the train there.
