The wonderful viaduct, at the west end of the station, was opened in 1851, three years after the line from York reached Knaresborough. The building and opening of the route was started by the East and West Yorkshire Junction Railway, but the company was later absorbed by the York and Midland Railway, also in 1851. The route would eventually become part of the LNER system, before nationalisation saw it absorbed into the Eastern Region of BR.
In this view, from the castle ruins, two Northern Rail 2-car Class 156 DMUs cross the viaduct at 10.36, with the 10.11 York to Leeds service. The lovely spring day sunshine brightens up the River Nidd and surrounding trees.
