Builth Wells was once served by two railways. The existing Central Wales Line was opened by the Central Wales Extension Railway between Llanelli and Shrewsbury. The low-level station was known as Llechryd and was located on the Mid Wales Railway between Brecon and Welshpool.
(1)It's a sunny and warm Sunday afternoon on the Heart of Wales Line, or the Central Wales line as it was then known then. The grand station building at Builth Road is the back drop at this quiet sleepy location as BR Derby-built Class 108 diesel multiple unit set no. S958 pauses at the station at 15.33 on a Swansea to Shrewsbury service. Two people actually boarded the train this afternoon, and after a short stop the train gently pulled away, spluttering away as only a first generation DMU can ever do, and peace soon decended on this quiet backwater.
