13th Jan 1991

On this day was exploring the Central Wales line by car, calling in at as many of the stations as I could as I headed south from Shrewsbury. Dolau halt was a real gem of a find, a lonely outpost of a village in Powys on the edge of Radnor Forest. As you can see the weather was beautiful, a crisp, bright day and a hard, hard haw frost that hung around all day. This little halt was very well kept an consisted of a single platform, a bench, and flower tubs on a ganger's truck mounted on a section of track on the platform. There was also a home-made information board explaining the history of the line. To whom, I can only guess, as this is a very sparsely-populated area, but I guess in summer there are plenty of walkers making use of the train service. A 10mph speed board and whistle sign protect the level crossing here.
My visit was a prelude to a far more regal visit, as Her Majesty The Queen visited this halt to open a new station shelter in 2002, whilst celebrating her Golden Jubilee.
