Thetford, Norfolk
Located 93 miles from London Liverpool Street, via Ely, this wonderfully preserved station was opened in 1845 and extended in 1889, and is now a Grade II listed building. On my first visit in 1991 it was like an oasis of traditional railway practice, fully signalled with semaphores and still oozing lots of atmosphere. It was also beautifully kept, with flowers in tubs and showing all evidence that somebody cared. Thetford was also the town used for the filming of Dad's Army. my personal favourite all-time comedy show, so it is always a bit of a pilgrimage when I go there, which is not very often!
