Passing the derelict Dawlish Signal Box at 09.34, West Coast Railway's 57601 and 47760 pass through the station on the 1Z47 06.10 Derby to Penzance "Cornish Riviera Statesman" railtour.
I believe that for many years the hope was that the signal box would be preserved and find a new use, but its exposure to the elements cause the deterioration of the structure to the extent that it was becoming unsafe. That's what happens when you don’t look after anything! It didn't have much time to go before the inevitable. For me this was a familiar sight during my formative years as a young trainspotter and "basher" of locos between Exeter and Newton Abbot. Often we would jump out at Dawlish to take the next train onward, hoping for something interesting at the front. I was always aware of the bells ringing from inside the box whilst I waited.
