12th Feb 1992

It really was a miserable day but in some ways the wet platform helps brighten up the scene a little. Class 116 DMU set no. C393 (DMS no. 51148 and DMBS no. 51135) depart west with a service to Carmarthen.
In the distance is Llanelli West signal box, guarding the level crossing. By now it had been relegated to ground frame, a status it had held since 1969. At the time of my photo it controlled not just this level crossing but another at the east end of the station, but in 2015 it was decommissioned after control of the crossings transferred to Port Talbot. The building survives under a Garde II listing.
