13th June 1997

The railroad through Bealville curls around as it climbs up towards Tunnel #5 and and the west switch at Cliffe. This is close to where the devastating earthquake of 1952 caused the railroad so much trouble. Tunnel #4 was day-lighted as a result.
Looking at this photo you imagine that you are seeing two different trains. You are not. This is in fact a very, very long "bare table" - empty intermodal flats - train climbing uphill with UP AC4400CW no. 6594 and SD90MAC no. 8109 on the front, exiting Tunnel #5 at 16.39 and approaching the switch at Cliffe. I calculated that this train was over 2 miles long!! Astounding, that's all I can say.
