The signal box was built by the South Eastern Railway in 1888, and was used as such until the line was re-signalled in 2003. It was then downgraded to crossing box, and will continue to be so for a few years yet I expect. There are 4 or five trains and hour passing through this station, not all stopping, so the crossing keeper is kept busy. The building behind was intriguing too, the faded Fremlins brewery advert giving away the fact that it was once The Railway Tavern (and Station Inn before), now a private house/shop.
