Killarney, Co. Kerry
Killarney station has an unusual arrangement where westbound trains run into the terminus and then back out to the mainline to continue the journey west. In contrast, eastbound trains run past the junction to the terminus, back in, and then depart eastwards onto the mainline. It's another one of those quirky arrangements that you find in Ireland that make it all the more interesting. The station was opened in 1853, the terminus of a 40 mile branch from Mallow, which is on the main Dublin to Cork mainline. The line was later extended to Tralee, leaving the legacy of the unusual operation that exisists today. Nowadays I think most trains are formed of multiple unit stock but during my visits in the 1980s and 1990s loco-hauled was the norm, and watching the sequence of trains arriving and departing was fascinating.
