Dover Western Docks, Kent

This station, known originally as Dover Marine, was closed completely in 1994, being converted into a cruise terminal. Its closure can be linked easily with the opening of the Channel Tunnel, with train services cut as passengers switched over to the new service, although of course ferries still ply the route between here and France. Opened in 1919, soon after the completion of Dover Harbour and Docks, this lovely building exuded everything that you would expect from a Victorian/Edwardian railway station, with especially attractive ironwork and enclosed train-shed. I was lucky to find myself in this part of the world in 1984, accompanying a school friend who had an interview at Canterbury University. I had been collecting Persil soap powder vouchers that gave us two-for-one train travel, so I went along for the ride, left him in Canterbury and explored the area by train. Glad I did!
