Arnside, Cumbria

This is one of my favourite locations in Britain, situated as it is on the River Kent estuary, on the edge of Morecambe Bay. The view from the promenade at Arnside, of the Arnside Viaduct, is one of the most spectacular views along this route, with the vast expanse of sand flats in the foreground, and the mountains on the distant Lakes District creating the backdrop. An afternoon or summer's evening gives you the best light. This is big sky country! But dangerous too, as the tides come in very fast and there are quicksands. No short cuts are advised here.

On my first visit I was witness to the Arnside Bore, a vert fast rising tide that rushes in, accompanied by the surreal sound of a wave that never crashes. It is a natural phenomenon that has to be seen to be believed. A bit like the Severn Bore in some ways, I suppose, but not enclosed by the river bank like the Severn. A mile or so out of the village is Arnside Knott, a National Trust area that offers amazing views across the estuary and over towards the Lake District.

Back in Arnside the local fish and chip shop is recommended!
