Far North Line & route to Kyle of Lochalsh
The target for my first All Line Rover was to get to the furthest extremities of the Scottish network, which was almost a complete success (just don't mention Thurso!). The Kyle line is a magical line, passing through rugged, wild, but beautiful scenery before terminating at a rather underwhelming and remote waterside station. But for many this is where the adventure begins. At the time of my visits in the 1980s the only way to Skye was by ferry, but today a bridge stretches across Loch Alsh. The route north to Wick and Thurso is a long one, with trains taking over 4 hours to get there! Wick has the distinction of being the station furthermost from London by train, but Thurso is the most northerly. One day I'll get there....
