Transrail's 56052 has arrived on the 6B71 10.28 Margam to Ebbw Vale, via Llanwern, steel coil train. It is resting in the yard at Ebbw Vale, amongst cargowaggons which I guess were used to transport the timplated steel back down the line. The tinplate works closed for good in 2002, and the site has been redeveloped.
Ebbw Vale Steelworks began in the 1780s, and by the 1930s was the largest steel mill in Europe. In the 1970s it was converted to produce tinplate.
