Holyhead, Gwynedd

Like so many other sea port towns, such as Penzance, Fishguard and Pembroke, there is something desolate and remote about Holyhead, at the end of the line but also feeling like it's at the end of everything else! A lost and forgotten outpost of civilisation. It's a windswept place, and a busy port, with regular sailings to Ireland. The station is unchanged from a previous era, with mechanical signalling and sidings once used to stable rakes of coaches used on the long distance expresses from London, and elsewhere. Sadly Holyhead now has a much lesser status, being served by trains from Manchester and Crewe, but at least there is still one important long distance train serving both north and south of the Principality, between here and Cardiff. But the station does look like the best days are over, which is very sad.
