Highland Main Line, Perth-Inverness (excluding Inverness)
The line passes over Drumochter, at 1484 feet above sea level the highest railway summit in the U.K., and Slochd, both two challenging climbs for any train. Much of the route is single track, with passing loops along the way. This is one of my all-time favourite train routes, passing through some truly wild and wonderful scenery. Access to the line is mostly easy, thanks to the A9 which parallels the line for most of the way. Although traffic is fairly light, there are generally two to three freight trains a day, Monday to Friday, including the Tesco intermodal service, which also runs on Saturday. If you are lucky with the weather then this line can produce some fantastic results for the photographer, and although I consider myself pretty average when it comes to railway photography, I've always been more than happy with the results I had.
