Folkston Funnel, GA
North of town, two routes combine, the Waycross sub from the north west, and the Savannah sub from the north. A few miles south of Folkston, at Callahan, the lines split, south west towards Ocala, and south to Miami. Hence the "funnel".
Whilst visiting Florida, a decision had to be made where to go to watch trains before we headed home. To be fair to Florida, it might be your top holiday destination with the weather and beaches to tempt you, let alone a certain animated mouse character, but for train fans it's a state that doesn't come to mind as being a hot-spot. But, over the border in to Georgia, the Folkston Funnel, it's a different matter, with a concentrated and almost constant flow of intermodel and manifest traffic, plus a few coal and grain trains, and Amtrak with their New York-bound services. I was fortunate to be able to spend a couple of days here with two good friends, and despite the almost unbearable humidity we had a great time. Check out the train watching platform on Folkston Funnel Street, a purpose built covered platform, alongside the tracks, that provides cover should it rain, piped scanner broadcasting to help you anticipate what coming, and fans to cool you down! And the railroad museum on the opposite side of the lines is well worth the visit, being accommodated inside the former train depot.
