Elvanfoot, South Lanarkshire
Around Lamington, Abington, and Crawford there are many very scenic views of the West Coast Main Line, but a little further south, not far from the summit at Beattock, is Elvanfoot, which also has a couple of passable locations. Elvanfoot used to have a station, closed in 1965, and only the site remains, nothing else. From 1901 until 1938 it was the junction of the remote Wanlockhead branch, serving lead mines in the area. It can feel somewhat bleak and isolated in this area, although today the wide Clyde valley seems to be dominated by the M74, which runs parallel to the railway, but the hills do provide a dramatic backdrop
