Barrow Hill Roundhouse, Staveley, Derbyshire
This really is a truly remarkable survivor, and one to visit as often as you can. Built by the Midland Railway in 1870 it was closed by British Rail in 1991 and was ready to be demolished. But then an effort was made to save and restore the site, and today it remains the UK's only roundhouse with working turntable. As well as a heritage centre with a host of steam, diesel and electric locomotives kept on site, it is also home to the Deltic Preservation Society's workshop and other commercial users.
